Squire William Raven has only one goal—to finally receive his spurs and become a knight. When his lord, Sir Robert de Cantilou, returns from a five-year crusade in the Holy Land, William wants nothing more than to impress him.

After Sir Robert’s return, noble guests arrive from France, bringing intrigue to the castle. William is oblivious to the politics, as he’s distracted by nightly visits from a faceless lover—a man who pleasures him in the dark and then leaves—a man he soon discovers is none other than his master, Sir Robert.

But William can’t ignore the scheming around him when he overhears a plot to murder Robert. He becomes intent on saving his lord and lover from those who would see him killed…

My Thoughts:

The Lion of Kent was my first foray into the M/M Romance Genre. I am such a sucker for that time period and the plot intrigued me.

Starting the book, I was not sure if it would be my “cup of tea” but the authors did a great job with this novella. The details of the time period and the characters were well written although I did find that the plot was a bit predictable. The book  is more character driven and I was very impressed at how well they were fleshed out.

I was intrigued by William from the first paragraph. He was passionate, angry and above all determined to achieve his goal of becoming a knight. Robert was the perfect counter personality for him. His cool reserve served as a balm for William’s emotional struggles and I enjoyed the interplay between them as their relationship grew from squire and knight to equal footing.

I would definitely recommend this book and look forward to more books about William and the trials he may face as a young knight.
